Sometime early last year, Filles Vertes Publishing reached out to me to see if I would have any interest in writing a short piece for their Mardi Gras Anthology book Masks, releasing March 2020. They reached out to various talented authors and I was stunned to be one of them.

After taking some time to think about it and summoning my demons to discuss my options, I decided to write a piece despite my lack of sleep. The piece came together faster than I anticipated as I was writing it at the same time I was writing the third installment to the Dead Dreamer series (releasing Oct. 2020).

For those of you who have enjoyed my work within the Dead Dreamer universe, I decided to stay on the path of the dead! Based in Mobile, Alabama, my short follows two soldiers right after the end of the Civil War when Mardi Gras makes it’s inevitable return.

I did hours of research on the subject, wanting to be as accurate as I could be in a fictional piece with my own lore thrown within. But you get a glimpse into what it was like becoming a Dead Dreamer in the time of the Civil War in the south where peace was rare to find.

With suspense and mystery, the story of Charles and William will leave you wanting more of the world of Dead Dreamer.

The Mobile Spirit: A Dead Dreamer Story

There are those who believe the dead shall never rise.
That was supposed to be true.
It was something taught to us all as children.

Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement.

When we died, our bodies were left behind, while the spirit was sent for judgement by God; there was no in between. I don’t believe I was lied to. It would have been impossible for any to have known. But the war taught us many things; things no man should have ever learned.

John 5:28-29
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

I heard no voice that day.
But I did discover one thing.
Death wore a mask.
